Data processing system for national surveys

Statistics Estonia is the home of public data in the country. In 2010, the agency began preparing for a register-based population census and needed an information system to support data processing at scale.

  • Goal

    Build a reliable system to extract, transfer and validate data for national statistics — with full control and traceability.

  • Solution

    We developed VAIS — the Survey Data Processing Information System.
    It enables data extraction, transformation, and loading into a source database.

    VAIS consists of three main applications:
    – VAIS Designer, for creating processing packages
    – VAIS Operator, for correcting data errors
    – VAIS Administrator, for managing and monitoring jobs

    The system runs on data warehouse schemas and is part of the official national statistics data infrastructure.
